Elm Tree Visit Parliament

Yesterday, as part of their Rise Up study of the Rule of the People, Year 4 witnessed democracy in action by visiting the Houses of Parliament on the very day that Brexit was being debated! We went into the House of Lords, sat in the public viewing gallery observing a Minster being quizzed in the House of Commons chaired by the speaker, John Bercow. We also saw the chambers where the Queen dresses for the State Opening of Parliament. The children also participated in a workshop about voting and representation where they stood for political parties based on a costed manifesto they had created and then each constituency voted for their MP. Every MP in the country was in the House of Commons for the Brexit debate and with TV camera crews everywhere and hundreds of protesters outside, it made for a truly memorable experience about democracy in the UK.
