Nursery admissions
Many of our children join St John the Baptist in the Nursery, aged three. A place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the main school however. We encourage all our families with children in nursery to apply for a place in our Reception. Children meeting the local authority’s entry requirements move on to Reception. As we have two classes in Reception, we do have places for children who do not attend our nursery.

Nursery children are allocated either part-time (15 hours) or full-time (30 hours) spaces. All children who are aged 3 and 4 years old receive 15 hours free child care. Children with working parents may be entitled to 30 hours of free childcare. To check if you are eligible for the 30 free hours childcare and to apply, please go to There is also information about the different types of services and support available to parents.

The Hackney Learning Trust are responsible for setting the admission arrangements for all schools for which they are the Admission Authority – that is, community and voluntary controlled schools in the borough.

For voluntary-aided schools, academies, foundation schools or free schools each school governing body or Academy Trust is their own admission authority.

If your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they are due to start primary school in September 2019.

The closing date for applying for your child’s primary school place is 15 January 2019. The outcome date was 16th April 2019.

Admissions for Years 1-6

From time to time, we also have vacancies in other year groups. To apply for a place for one of our Years 1 to 6 classes, parents need to go to the Hackney Learning Trust to fill out a mid-term transfer form. We encourage visits to the school for prospective families. If you would like to arrange a visit to see the school with one of our SLT, please call the school office on 0207 739 4902.
